Irish-American Patricia Carey is a freelance vocal instructor and retired opera singer. She had previously worked for the New York City Opera before retiring. Alison Carey, Morgan Carey, and Mariah Carey are her children. She is also Monroe and Moroccan Cannon’s grandmother.

Patricia Carey was raised in Springfield, Illinois after being born on February 15, 1937, in Virgin, Utah. Her father died while her mother was carrying her, and she had an Irish Catholic mother. She was the middle kid of three, and because her hair wasn’t blonde and her eyes were a mix of brown and green instead of her siblings’ blue eyes, she was referred to as the dark child. In Patricia’s early years, racism would exist. Mariah recounts Patricia’s experience of being publically humiliated for taking a nap with a Black boy in her memoir. Although Patricia later became involved in the civil rights struggle, the Carey family was torn apart by her subsequent life and connection with a Black man. According to Mariah’s autobiography, Patricia developed a love for music after hearing an aria on a classical music radio station.

The most beautiful sound she had ever heard, according to her, was this one. After winning a scholarship to the elite Julliard School for Music, she made the decision to relocate to New York City. She would later make her stage debut at Lincoln Center while singing with The New York City Opera. The 13-track To Start Again album by Patricia was recorded in 1977.
